Personal Care Aide - Alzheimer's and Dementia Care

JOB DESCRIPTION

The Personal Care Aide provides non-medical, in-home support and home management services to clients with a special focus on Clients with Alzheimer's Disease or another form of dementia. He or she provides companionship to those individuals requiring socialization and minimum guidance for a safe, protected, clean, and orderly environment.  The service area includes Orange County; mainly the Huntington Beach, Fountain Valley, Garden Grove, Westminster, and surrounding areas. 

The ideal candidate for this position has a high school diploma or GED at a minimum, additional training or education to achieve certification, and is certified as a Nursing Assistant (CNA), or Home Health Aide (HHA) is highly desired, but is not necessary. Previous experience is preferred. In addition, he or she has a genuine desire to work with the elderly or disabled, reliable transportation, a valid driver's license, a clean driving record, and current automobile insurance. Effective oral and written skills, empathy and the ability to listen, good time management skills, and professional dress, speech, and behavior are all required for this position.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assists client with all personal care functions as needed (bathing, toileting, undergarment changing, etc.)
  • Assists client at mealtimes, prepares nutritious meals and monitors eating habits
  • Promotes the client’s mental alertness through involvement in activities of interest. Provides emotional support and promotes a sense of well-being
  • Provides companionship for the client including, but not limited to: talking and listening, reading aloud, providing social and emotional support
  • Assists client to and from daily activities
  • Performs light housekeeping tasks and assists with laundry
  • Ensures that required documentation is complete and is in compliance with regulations and standards
  • Establishes and maintains effective communication and a professional relationship with clients, family members, office personnel and co-workers
  • Participates in continuing education programs and in-service, staff meetings, and client conferences as requested by immediate supervisor

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Good communication and conversational skills
  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Knowledge of general sanitary and safety practices
  • Able to stand, sit, walk, reach, kneel, crouch, and lift up to 50 pounds
  • Able to work days, evenings, weekends, and holidays
  • Unrestricted driver's license and clean driving record
  • Reliable transportation and valid automobile insurance
  • Must have your own vehicle and be willing to transport clients
  • Able to use and have access to computer (for scheduling and client purposes)
